About the Options Program |
|
The Options Program at Bishop England High School provides an inclusive educational experience for students with special needs. It is a language-based academic program with emphasis on processing information through listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students with mild to moderate cognitive delays are accepted into the program and included in regular classrooms to the greatest extent possible. Students benefit from inclusion opportunities in a variety of academic and elective courses. Students in the Options program receive more individualized instruction as needed to facilitate their continued academic progress. Options courses are conducted in small groups with a maximum of 6:1 student to teacher ratio and use a variety of hands-on activities, cooperative learning, and interactive technologies to meet each student’s needs.
In addition to the expectation of continual academic progress, students accepted into the Options program are required to meet the school’s already high behavioral standards established for all students. Most students receive a “Certificate of Achievement” upon completion of the program. In order to be eligible for the program, prospective students must be at least 14 years old. Because the primary mission of the school is to serve the Catholic community of the Diocese of Charleston, priority is given to those students currently enrolled in Catholic schools. Acceptance is contingent upon space availability and a number of other factors, including an applicant’s academic and disciplinary records from previous schools. In order to be considered for admission, students must demonstrate: · The desire to grow closer to God by taking part in spiritual opportunities provided by the school. · The willingness to follow the high academic and behavioral standards of BEHS. · Minimum levels of academic achievement which indicate past successes in learning environments. · Proficiency in math and English equivalent to second through sixth grade levels. · The skills necessary to initiate simple written and verbal expression. · An ability to work in group situations with minimal distraction to themselves or others. · The capacity to interact socially with students from all academic levels. |
