The academic peer buddies help students achieve academic benchmarks through peer-tutoring during the school day.  They provide one-on-one tutoring, help students complete academic projects, and model positive work and study habits.

The social peer buddies participate in service projects and social activities after school and on the weekends.  On October 30th, the group put together a Halloween carnival for the residents of Spring Arbor Assisted Living Facility.  The social peer buddy program helps students establish friendships, practice social skills,  and develop positive peer relationships.

In addition to participating in inclusive classes,  students enrolled in the Options program have the opportunity to interact with academic and social peer buddies.  College-prep students serve as peer buddies during their study hall or free time.  The peer buddies have testified to the benefits they have reaped from the school’s addition of individuals with special needs.  As one example, a student who served as a peer mentor wrote, “I have learned the art of patience and the value it brings.  With patience comes understanding and that is the key to us all accepting one another no matter what.”  Peer mentors learn life lessons that promote tolerance and esteem diversity. Through the use of peer buddies, students in the Options program have central roles in academic, athletic, social, and service activities.
